2D Electrophoresis: Protein Profiling and Separation
In this beginner/intermediate-level workshop, students will learn how to separate and analyze complex protein mixtures using 2D electrophoresis, a powerful technique widely used in proteomics and the biotech industry. This class focuses on understanding how proteins can be resolved based on their isoelectric point (pI) and molecular weight.
Participants will manipulate protein profiles by adjusting sample pH, then run the resulting fractions through SDS-PAGE gels to resolve individual proteins. The experiment will focus on separating and identifying the five major proteins in whey isolate, with the goal of estimating their relative concentrations using gel analysis.
This class provides practical skills in protein chemistry, buffer design, and electrophoretic techniques that are foundational for careers in biopharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and biomarker discovery. Ideal for students looking to build lab experience and strengthen their resume for industry or research positions.
